Jim Gilbert is a founding partner of GBSR Attorneys. Jim has been in private practice since 1995. He is a graduate of T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, and received his undergraduate degree from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.

Jim’s practice is highly varied. His experience spans from estate litigation to personal injury cases. He has tried numerous cases in court, both to judges and to juries. Residential and commercial real estate transactions, real estate development, and civil litigation involving real estate disputes have been mainstays of his practice. He has represented many of the major real estate brokerages, mortgage brokers, and real estate developers at Smith Mountain Lake and he is often retained as outside counsel by First American Title Insurance Company to handle title resolution issues throughout the state. Jim’s experience also includes the formation and management of several title insurance agencies.

In 2007, Jim championed the cause of property owner’s rights in a number of cases related to restrictions on short-term leases. This representation ultimately resulted in a successful oral argument before the Virginia Supreme Court. Since that time, Jim has been asked to share his expertise by working on cases involving this issue all over the state, including the Shenandoah Valley and Williamsburg.

Jim’s interests and hobbies include riding horses and team roping (a rodeo event). Jim enjoys running, working out, hiking, and the outdoors. He also enjoys spending time at Smith Mountain Lake with his extended family. Jim loves watching his son play lacrosse and ice hockey and tries to never miss a game.
