James I. Gilbert, IV
Jim Gilbert is a founding partner of GBSR Attorneys. Jim has been in private practice since 1995. He is a graduate of T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, and received his undergraduate degree from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.
Jim’s practice is highly varied. His experience spans from real estate litigation to personal injury cases. He has tried numerous cases in court, both to judges and to juries. While residential and commercial real estate transactions, real estate development, and litigation involving real estate disputes have been mainstays of his practice, Jim has also acted as lead counsel in serious and complex civil litigation involving business conspiracy, fraud, estate disputes, commercial claims, insurance matters, and much more. He has represented a number of major real estate brokerages, mortgage brokers, and real estate developers. He is often retained as outside litigation counsel by national title insurance carriers to represent their insureds (such as Fannie Mae, Wells Fargo, US Bank, etc.) to handle title resolution issues throughout Virginia.
In 2007, Jim championed the cause of property owner’s rights in a number of cases related to restrictions on short-term leases. This representation ultimately resulted in a successful oral argument before the Virginia Supreme Court (Scott v. Walker, 274 Va. 209 (2007)). Since that time, Jim has been asked to share his expertise by working on cases involving this issue all over the state, including the Shenandoah Valley and Williamsburg.
Jim’s interests and hobbies include riding horses and team roping (a rodeo event) at his farm, Shadow Ridge Stables, which is located near Smith Mountain Lake. Jim enjoys running, working out, camping, hiking, and the outdoors. He also enjoys spending time at Smith Mountain Lake with his extended family.
